DID YOU KNOW THAT volunteers with Hyndburn Towpath Taskforce have joined the Trusts Towpath Survey Project to record the towpath network.
We will be recording from Whitebirk, at the border with Blackburn, to Shuttleworth Bridge, on the border with Hapton.
Yep, it is going to take some time!
Since all canals have unique characteristics, the purpose of the survey work is to gather and capture vital information about the waterway network. The survey is essential to support and inform decision-making on locations and types of towpath enhancement schemes and to help plan the towpath improvements.
The Canal & River Trust is the charity that cares for 2,000 miles of waterways. They believe that life is better by water. They work with communities to transform their local canal or river, creating places and spaces that can be used and enjoyed by everyone, every day.
Towpaths are unique and special places for everyone to share and enjoy.
We want to do what we can to create towpaths and spaces that support all the wonderful things towpaths are used for, balancing the needs of everyone, providing benefits to all visitors and not be unduly detrimental to one type of user.
Barbara Sharples, Lead Volunteer, said, The Hyndburn Towpath Taskforce is a sub-area of the Leeds-Liverpool Central stretch of the canal. Our first Taskforce was in May 201,9 and we like to work there at the beginning of May every year as an anniversary event. We were towpath volunteers then, but most of us have now done additional training and are Conservator volunteers. The surveys are being conducted across the country. Adding Waterside Specialists to our Trust volunteering roles is enabling us to undertake the survey work and make sure Hyndburn is included.
