The 2022 #AmazingAccrington Christmas Light Switch On will be hit by World Cup fever on Thursday 24th November, with a number of exciting football-related activities set to take place.

The free-to-attend event, which kicks off at 4 pm, will see up to 500 footballs handed out to children on the night, appearances from both Accrington Stanley and Accrington Stanley Women players, while live World Cup football will be shown upstairs in Accrington Market Hall.

From 5:25 pm players from Accrington Stanley and Accrington Stanley Women will be giving away free footballs from the main stage. Throughout the night anyone who can score past Santa in the Accrington Stanley Community Trust Santa Penalty Shoot-Out will also receive a free football, while those who complete an extra special Christmas character trail around the market, both indoor and outdoor, will take home a football.

Alongside those activities, Accrington Stanley mascot Winstanley will be available to meet on the night, and the World Cup clash between Portugal and Ghana (kick-off 4 pm) will also be shown live on a screen upstairs at Accrington Market Hall.

Murray Dawson, Chair of #AmazingAccrington, said: “The eyes of the world are currently fixated on the World Cup in Qatar, so why not bring a little bit of that excitement to the #AmazingAccrington Christmas Light Switch On.

“We have over 500 footballs to give away and we would encourage anyone who wants one, to get down to the town centre as soon as possible on Thursday, to avoid disappointment.”

Other activities taking place on the night include the main stage headlined by The Take That Experience, as well as live music from Gavin Young, a collective school choir who will be receiving selection boxes courtesy of The Cardboard Box Company, the Neil Diamond Experience, Jack & the Beanstalk panto, fire eaters dance act Desi Nach, and the fantastic world-renowned Accrington Pipe Band. A full night of fun from 4 pm until 8 pm also includes a fabulous funfair on Broadway.

The event, which is being sponsored by North Lancs Training Group, Sundown Solutions, Accrington & Rossendale College, Hyndburn Borough Council, Financial Affairs and The Cardboard Box Company, starts at 4 pm, with the countdown to the Light Switch On taking place at 7:35 pm.

Accrington Market will also be transformed into a spectacular Christmas Market including over 70 stalls and headlined by Great Harwood based business Finch Bakery, while there will be a number of great #ShopLocal offers available on the night, with many Hyndburn independents open on the night.
