The Official Accrington Stanley Supporters Trust (OASST) has commissioned a special limited-edition pin badge commemorating the 110th anniversary of the Accrington Pals.

The unique badge brings together two important parts of the town’s identity, linking the 11th (Service) Battalion, The East Lancashire Regiment (Accrington) with Accrington Stanley.

The story of the Accrington Pals is firmly embedded in the history of the town, with the courage and sacrifice of the battalion during the Battle of the Somme in July 1916 remembered by generations of people in Accrington and beyond.

Their story of a relatively small group standing together and facing overwhelming odds also has a special resonance with Accrington Stanley and the fighting spirit which has long been associated with the football club and the town it represents.

The limited-edition badges have been specially commissioned by the OASST during the 110th anniversary year and will be available for supporters and members of the local community to purchase.

Peter Leatham, Chair of the OASST, said: “We’re incredibly proud to commission these limited-edition badges. The Accrington Pals are such a special part of our town’s history, and it’s important that their story continues to be remembered.”

Cath Holmes, from the Accrington Pals Commemorative Group, said: “It’s a lovely touch from the OASST, particularly during the 110th anniversary year.

“The Accrington Pals mean so much to our town, and it’s wonderful to see their story and memory being recognised in this way.”

The badges are priced at £4.50 each, or £6 including second-class postage and packaging.

The proceeds from the badges will go towards funding the matchday displays for the annual Remembrance Day fixture, as well as the memorial service on the garden at the Wham Stadium.

They can be purchased from the OASST shop in Accrington Arndale from Thursday, 1st October, while supporters will also be able to buy them from the OASST tables in Coley’s and in the fan zone on Accrington Stanley matchdays from Saturday, 3rd October onwards.
