Sarah Smith, MP for Hyndburn and Haslingden, made an impressive debut for Accrington Stanley Women’s Open Age Development team on Sunday, playing a key role in a hard-fought 1-0 victory over local rivals Blackburn Eagles.

Taking to the pitch at Accrington Academy, Smith delivered a commanding performance in defence during her 40 minutes of action, helping Stanley Women secure their first win of the season while keeping a clean sheet.

It was the local MPs first matchday appearance for Stanley Women, having joined the club for several training sessions throughout the season.

Dominant in the air and composed throughout, she proved a reliable presence at the back in a tightly contested encounter.

The decisive moment came courtesy of Pippa Smithson, whose goal sealed the victory and capped off a determined team performance.

Accrington Stanley Women’s Chair, Sami Smithson, said: “It was great to see Sarah making her debut. She had a really good game in defence and was a big factor in helping us to get a clean sheet.”
