Organisers of the 2024 Accrington Food Festival, #AmazingAccrington, held an exciting competition to challenge local primary school children to decorate a special commemorative cake to celebrate Hyndburn Borough Council’s 50th anniversary – which received over 900 entries.

Council Leader Cllr Munsif Dad chose a first, second and third place out of the fantastic entries, with prizes including a family meal at The Crafty Fox for first place going to Ruby D of All Saints Primary, second place was a Finch Bakery voucher for Mila Ryan of St Peters and St Pauls Primary, while third place was awarded to Sami Mohammed of West End Primary who took home a voucher for Oswaldtwistle Mills.

Accrington Food Festival compere and star of Netflix’s extreme cake makers, Molly Robbins, then created the winning design, which was unveiled to the public at the Food Festival on Saturday 1st June in Accrington town centre.

Murray Dawson, Chair of #AmazingAccrington, said: “We were delighted to create a ‘design a cake’ competition to celebrate Hyndburn Borough Council’s 50th anniversary, getting all our local primary schools involved – and what a response.

“Engaging local school schools is a big part of the Accrington Food Festival and it was fantastic for our brilliant winner Ruby to see her cake larger than life, made by Netflix’s Molly Robbins!”

Cllr Munsif Dad, Council Leader said: “I was really blown away by the number and quality of the entries for this competition, the teachers and students really got behind it and it was so nice to see all their creativity. Well done to all our winners, it was a difficult choice!”

The competition was part of an exciting day of activities at the #AmazingAccrington Food Festival, with Michelin Star and TV chef, Glynn Purnell, headlining the main cooking demonstration area alongside compere Molly and local chef and owner of The Crafty Fox, Paul Fox.

The 2024 Accrington Food Festival was sponsored by Hyndburn Borough Council, Vita Accrington, iMEP – International Music Event Production specialists, and Sundown Solutions.
